What do we already know about Athlete Transition from sport?
We know a lot, but far less than we need to know. I would argue that the most important thing we know is how much misinformation is out there, and how strong people’s opinions can be on this subject. Why? Sport is very important to a vast segment of the population, particularly the fans, stakeholders and athletes. That means money, notoriety and power – and lots of it. The lives of athletes and the wallets of stakeholders are closely tied to the health of the sport. Read that sentence again, I said ‘the health of the sport’, not necessarily the health of the athletes. Sport is big business, and it is necessary to understand the full costs of that business.
