Why? Sport is very important to a vast segment of the population, particularly the fans, stakeholders and athletes. That means money, notoriety and power – and lots of it. The lives of athletes and the wallets of stakeholders are closely tied to the health of the sport. Read that sentence again, I said ‘the health of the sport’, not necessarily the health of the athletes. Sport is big business, and it is necessary to understand the full costs of that business.
